Almost Ordinary: Marslin, Round 7, Summer

Maya Marslin is 32, Cameron, Anna, and Lyssa Marslin are 14

Narrated by Anna Marslin

Lately mom has been so annoying , whenever I’m on the phone she always has to butt in to “put away laundry” or “make the beds” or something.  I’m not buying it, I think she’s trying to eavesdrop on my conversations.  I met this college guy, Tyler, and we’ve been talking lately.  He plays basketball, and he’s a Sophomore right now, so he’s not that much older than me.

Tour of Ardania

So, basically, this is just because I really really didn’t want to do the Straight update right now, but I wanted to put something up, so: Ta-da!  Tour of Ardania, next I’ll do the University, and then my new sister neighborhood Calinloch, where a few of the families are already living.

First, there’s Ardania as a whole.  I went a bit tree crazy, as you can see 🙂

Breaking Point: Marslin 2, Part 2, Summer, Round 6

Ralph Marslin is 42, Cameron, Anna, and Lyssa Marslin are 12.

SPOILER ALERT:  This one was very sad, yet satisfying for me.

Ralph walks in, door slamming, face contorted, with the smell of alcohol around him.

Lyssa wakes up, rubbing her eyes, the brightness burning.

Anna wakes up almost at the same time, in the same way.  They’re so much like twins sometimes.

He goes over to the computer, and starts madly typing something.  In the bathroom, Cameron can hear him, and he is worried.

“Dad, what’s wrong?”  Anna asks.  He sneers.

“Why would you think something is wrong?”  He asks, his voice heavy, words slurred, tongue weighed down by alcohol.

He lunges at her, making her flinch.  When she does this, he laughs.

“What’s wrong?  Scared of your father?”  He moves towards her again, but before he has any time to do anything, Cameron speaks.

“Dad!  Stop!”

“Dad!  Leave her alone!”

“And what do you propose to do to stop me?”

Cameron doesn’t know what Ralph’s going to do to his sisters, and he doesn’t know why he wants to do anything to his sisters, but he does know that he’s not going to let anything happen to them.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do, but I promise, it’ll stop you.”

“Really?  You’re not scared?”  He’s laughing now, an odd, scary laugh, one that scares Cameron.

Lyssa, tenderhearted little Lyssa, can’t take it.  She goes running out of the room, covering her face in her hands.  Anna just stands there, petrified.  Not knowing what to do.

Cameron shoves his father back.  Hard.  Ralph is a little surprised.  But he’s still laughing.

“Back.  Off.”  Cameron says through gritted teeth.

Ralph rushes towards him, backhanding him suddenly.  Cameron sees stars for a moment.

Sweet little Lyssa, she can’t take it anymore.  She rushes towards Ralph, dragging his hand away from Cameron.

“Leave him alone!  Leave him alone!”  She’s crying now, tears streaming down her face.

Ralph backhands her too, the smile gone from his face now.  All he can see are her eyes.  They’re brown, like Maya’s.  He hates Maya.  And when he looks at Lyssa’s face, all he can see… is Maya.

She slumps back away from him, everything hurting.  He laughs, although it’s more of a harsh bark.

Anna pulls him off Lyssa, and Cameron rushes forward.  Ralph shoves him, but Cameron stands his ground.

Anna rushes to the bathroom, tears streaming down her cheeks.  She can’t take it.  God, what is happening?

This time, Cameron gets Ralph.  He’s stronger than Ralph thought, and the punch hurts like fire.

Lyssa grabs the phone, and dials 9-1-1.

“Hello, 9-1-1 Emergency.  How may we direct your call?”  The calm voice answers.

“H-hello.  My name is- my name is-  Lyssa M-marslin.  My father- he’s hurting us… and my brother.  Please come.  Quickly.”  To the operator, she sounds like a scared little child, but that’s what she is.  The address is exchanged.

“Ma’am, please, don’t hang up.  Help is on the way.’

Ralph hears the call, and he takes off running.  He doesn’t look back.

Cameron finds Lyssa out on the porch, holding herself, shivering.  She’s not cold, it’s the middle of summer.  She’s scared.

“Cameron, make it stop.  Make it stop.”  She whispers.  He hugs her, holding her tight.

“It’s okay.  Come inside.”  He manages to pull her shivering form into the house.

Anna is sitting on the floor, holding her knees into herself.  When she sees Cameron come inside, she looks at him, a blank look in her eyes.

“Cam… I saw it… I knew what he was doing… but I couldn’t stop it.  I couldn’t do anything.  I couldn’t stop it…”  Her voice trails off again, and she just sits there, holding herself.

Cameron grabs a chair next to where she is, holding his head in his hand.

“It’s okay.  He’s gone.  We’re safe.  I stopped him.  He didn’t hurt you.”  He repeats it to himself, his mantra.  Maybe if he hears himself say it, he’ll believe it.

Lyssa buries her head in her arms.  Maybe if she closes her eyes, it’ll all go away.  She’ll wake up, and it will all have been a dream.  She’ll go back to that day, two or three years ago.  And it will have never happened.

“Make it stop.  Make it stop.  Please, make it stop.”  She whispers.

They can hear the siren now.  But it doesn’t register.

The officer starts running the moment she gets out of the car.  Domestic abuse… it isn’t something to be worked on slowly.

She manages to get all of the kids into a room.  Their faces, their expressions… they’re so blank, so glassy.  It scares her.  The most receptive one is the boy.  He speaks to her.  Softly, but he speaks.

“Kid… what happened?  I need you to tell me.”

He looks at her, his blue eyes so much sadder, so much older, than a child his age’s eyes should be.

“It was my dad…”  He starts.

  • Sorry that this one was so dark…. but, I think it was time to confront the Ralph Marslin issue.
  • I kind of hate Ralph now… don’t you?
  • The children are (obviously) going to go back to their mother, and Ralph is (obviously) going to be sent to jail.
  • Also, I just wanted to mention:  The issue of domestic abuse is a real one, and it happens every day much more than it should.  Hopefully this will raise awareness a little, but just remember, stuff like this really does happen.
  • Thanks for reading!  A much more light-hearted Uni post tomorrow/day after 🙂

Coming To A Head: Marslin, Round 6, Summer

Ralph Marslin is 32, Cameron, Lyssa, and Anna are all 12.

“Whoa!”  Cameron exclaims.  He’s reading a book about the work of Police Officers on the streets.  He can’t believe that one guy- well, let’s just say he probably shouldn’t have read that part.

“What’s going on?”  Ralph asks.

“Oh, nothing.”  Cameron mumbles, his voice soft.

“Listen, I have to stay at work late tonight, got some extra paperwork to do and stuff.”  Ralph begins.  Cameron knows he’s lying.  His line of work doesn’t deal with paperwork, unless its cold, hard cash.  He nods slightly.

“Your sisters might be coming to spend the night, I don’t know.  Your mother…”  At this point his voice trails off and Cameron can hear him whispering obscenities under his breath.

“… but anyway, they might come, and they might not.”  As he says this, he stands up, seeing the carpool.  Cameron absentmindedly wonders if it’s the getaway car.  He doesn’t ask though.

“If you get hungry, order some Chinese or something.  There’s money on the table.”  He leaves, and Cameron is grateful.

“Lyss, please come.  Anna will come if you do, I know she will.”  A pause.

“Yes, he’s already left for work.”

“Please, Lyss, please.  I don’t want to be alone.  Again.”  That breaks her, he knew it would.

“I’ll call in Chinese.  Any type you want.  Lomaine?  Then Lomaine it is.”

“I don’t know, maybe they’ll come over.  I’ll ask.  Yes, I know that it’s Anna’s fault your asking.  I know the difference between you guys.  She’s the desperate one.  No, I didn’t really mean that.”  He smiles a little.

“But you promise you’ll come, right?  I’m ordering right now.  Tell Mom and Mamma I love them.  Love you too Lyss.”

He calls Yu and Matt as well, he might as well have some of his friends over too.

Lyssa and Anna get there first, they took the bus.  He gives Lyssa a great big hug.

“Thank you so much for coming.  I know you didn’t want to.”  He whispers.  She smiles.

“Anything for you Cameron, I know how lonely you get without our company.”  She laughs as she says this, and he laughs too.

“Cameron!  Where’s the food!  Lyssa told me that you told her that there’d be food!”  Anna calls out.  They may say that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, but Cameron and Lyssa are pretty sure that it applies to Anna too.

Matt and Yu arrive shortly, and are followed by Chinese food.  Anna cheers, although because of food or boys Cameron is not really sure of.

He doesn’t really notice it until Anna points it out, but Lyssa and Matt are sitting about as far apart as they possibly can on the couch.

Anna hides her snickers by stuffing her face, while Cameron, not really wanting to think about one of his best friends and his little sister awkwardly stares down his noodles.

Anna, apparently spurned by the fact that her shy younger sister, who has the weirder haircut, is getting attention from males other than her brother, decides to put her moves on Yu.  Yu doesn’t object.  Cameron decides to work out instead of watching these atrocities.  God, when did their hormones get so bad anyways?

Feeling better now that Cameron is gone, Matt decides to talk to Lyssa again.  It starts a little bit awkward.

Cameron, unnerved now, beckons for Matt to follow him to his room, to “talk about stuff”.

“Look, Matt, what’s going on with you and my sister?”  Asks Cameron, never one to beat around the bush.

“N-nothing.  I swear.  We’re just friends.”

“Oh, come on, you guys are totally into each other.  My sister told me so.  She says that all Lyssa ever talks about is you.”

Matt blushes.

“Really?”  Cameron nods at him in answer.

“Well, I mean, I guess I do like her.”

“Then go for it.  Just don’t treat her badly.”

He walks out, and grabs Lyssa’s hand suddenly.  It’s soft, and warm, and curls around his unexpectedly.

“Look, Lyssa, I really like you a lot… do you like me?”  He asks.

She shakes her head yes, a blush spreading like fire across her cheeks.  He smiles too.  They are happy.

Later on, everyone leaves and Anna and Lyssa curl up on the couches to go to bed.

” ‘Night Anna.”  Lyssa murmurs.

” ‘Night Lyssa.”  Anna slurs back.

Outside, the car rolls up, fast approaching.  It’s much later than most late work nights.  One in the morning, to be exact.

Cameron is still awake though, and he’s waiting.  He knows how bad these “late nights” can get.  And he’s not going to let anything that’s happened to him happen to his sisters.  Ever.

  • This is part one of a two part story line about the Marslin’s.  Part two should be up tomorrow.
  • What do you think of their skins?  I got a new one for default, and although I didn’t like it at first, it’s actually started to grow on me… I’m still debating whether or not I’ll keep it though.
  • Matt+Lyssa= ADORABLE!!!!!!!  They’re not actually together or anything, they’re WAY to young for that, but I think they’re so cute and innocent together 😛
